How To Develop A Unique Home Decor Style

By Karen Hardeman

Your home is where you spend time relaxing and enjoying life, so you want it to be a place that is going reflect your personal sense of style. It takes time to develop a style and you have to do some careful planning if you want your home to look good. There has to be some cohesion or else your interiors are going to look chaotic. When you develop your own unique home decor style, your house is going to be a true reflection of your personality.

A unique home is not going to look like anyone else’s home. It won’t be filled with big box furniture and generic accessories that everyone else has. When you are developing a unique style of your own, you want to sit down with some paper and think about the types of styles and furniture that speak to you. If you are in love with vintage items, you might want to focus on vintage style for your home.

Vintage home decor allows you to display your vintage collectibles and you can choose vintage furniture for your home. The pieces don’t have to match and they just have to be comfortable. If your style tends to be more romantic and dreamy, you could go for a Shabby Chic interior with vintage lace, pastel floral slipcovers, and furniture that is painted white and looks worn.

If you are more drawn to formal rooms, you might want to learn more about traditional interior design where the rooms use dark wood and pairs of furniture and accessories to create symmetry. The traditional look has a touch of luxury along with dark and rich colors that give each room depth.

Modern interior design is a great choice when you love minimal designs and don’t want your rooms to feel dark. One of the great things about minimal design is that it focuses on open light-filled rooms. The furniture has clean lines and modern styling that is free of ornamentation. With modern rooms, you don’t see visual clutter which allows you to think and relax.

Farmhouse or country decor gives you a connection with the past. Distressed wood, large sinks, vintage fabrics and comfortable inviting spaces are the hallmark of country decor. The kitchen is one of the most important parts of the home and it is designed to be a place to eat and also cook large meals.

Think about what you want in your home and what qualities are important to you and you will know what type of furniture and accessories you need. You don’t have to stick with one style either. There is nothing wrong with mixing up different themes as long as the end result is a unique home decor style that doesn’t look confusing or chaotic.

The furniture and accessories should still work well together and should look like the designs are intentional instead of just thrown together. This means that you need to put thought into every room.
